Threave Castle photo, Threave Castle

Threave is a huge 14th century fortification on an island in the River Dee, just outside Castle Douglas, Dumfries and Galloway. The castle was built by Archibald the Grim, Lord of Galloway, and was for many years the home of the Black Douglasses. The castle can only be reached by boat, with regular trips organised by Historic Scotland, who operate the property.
