 photo, Manorbier Castle

One of the few privately owned castles in this list, Manorbier is a very well preserved fortress near the south Pembrokeshire coast. It was begun in the early 12th century and is perhaps most famous as the birthplace of Gerald de Barri, the scholar known to history as Gerald of Wales. The location is fabulous, and the castle an absolute delight to visit.
