Ossian's Seat, The Hermitage, Dunkeld

The Story Behind the Image - Ossian's Seat, The Hermitage, Perthshire

The Hermitage is a beautiful historic landscaped woodland outside Dunkeld, Perthshire. The Hermitage was laid out in the 18th century as a pleasure ground for the Dukes of Atholl, who owned nearby Dunkeld House.

The woodland includes some of the tallest trees in Scotland, arrayed on the banks of the River Braan.

Throughout the woodland, the Dukes of Atholl scattered landscape features such as a manmade grotto called Ossian's Cave and a viewing platform over Black Linn Falls called Ossian's Hall. Near the grotto is a stone seat overlooking waterfalls on the River Braan, known as Ossian's Seat.

I've visited The Hermitage several times. It is one of those places you want to come back to again and again. On this occasion, I came in September, on a dull, overcast day with rain in the air.

Despite the weather, the beautiful autumn colours turned the woodland into a wonderful canvas of reds and golds. I captured this photo of Ossian's Seat, looking through a lovely stand of conifers.
