Winskill Stones Limestone Pavement

The Story Behind the Image - Winskill Stones limestone pavement, Yorkshire Dales

The winskillStones is a striking area of limestone pavement north of Settle, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The limestone pavement forms part of a nature reserve and offers spectacular views north towards the Yorkshire Dales' famous 'Three Peaks' of Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-y-Ghent.

The nature reserve was initiated by the gardening writer and broadcaster Geoff Hamilton and is dedicated to his memory.

Limestone pavement is a term used most commonly in Britain and Ireland, referring to an exposed area of flat limestone split by fissures into sections that resemble paving stones. There are several areas of limestone pavement in the Yorkshire Dales, but the Winskill Stones area is perhaps the easiest to access.

I visited Winskill several times over the course of a family holiday spent near Malham, not too far to the east. On this occasion, I arrived at the stones just before sunset, but to my disappointment heavy clouds obscured the sun.

I set up my tripod and waited, more in hope than expectation, but my hope proved well-founded, as just before sunset the clouds parted and golden sunlight flooded the limestone pavement, allowing me to get this photo.
