History Craig Y Nos Castle was once the home of the world famous Soprano Madame Adelina Patti, who felt she had found the home of her dreams amid the calm isolation of this beautiful valley.
For fifty years she entertained the rich and famous of the era including many of the crowned Kings and Queens of Europe.
The castle's name alone strikes a romantic note and in rough translation means 'Rock of the Night'.
Edward VII visited Craig-Y-Nos when he was still the Prince of Wales.
For 25 years Adelina Patti sang by private invitation for Queen Victoria.
The Grade One listed theatre at the Castle is modelled on the Bayreuth Opera House.
Originally designed as a private auditorium where Madame Patti would enthral all who came to hear her sing, the theatre can seat up to 150 guests.
Since Patti's death, stories have been told of her benign presence being seen or felt over the years.
The tiny figure of a lady dressed in black has been seen gliding across different rooms and drifting around the castle courtyard.
One story tells of a lady pianist who sat at a piano in the theatre and felt a presence behind her.
At her first attempt she played the whole of Patti's "Home Sweet Home" perfectly, before turning around to find no one there. please note breakfast is served 8.30am to 9.30pm, on arrival during the week some refurbishment will be taking place but interruptions are kept to a minimun.

Directions
Assuming you are coming from London, Heathrow or anywhere in the South of the UK, take the M4 to Junction 45 which is the Swansea exit. Take the A4067 north towards Pontardawe. Continue up the A4067, bypassing Pontardawe, and keep following the brown tourist signs advertising the Dan Yr Ogof caves. The A4067 takes you past the nearby towns of Ystradgynlais and Abercrave and the road winds through the small village of Penycae immediately before you reach Craig Y Nos. The castle is a well signposted large building on your right. If you have come along the M4 from England, this route will take about 1 hour and twenty five minutes from the toll Bridge into Wales.
