Wingfield Manor is the imposing ruin of a 15th-century manor house. Its most enduring claim to fame is that Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned here not once but twice (in 1569 and 1584-5).
The house was begun by Ralph, Lord Cromwell, Chancellor of England, around 1441. Cromwell, who also built Tattershall Castle in Lincolnshire, was heavily influenced by French design and created at Wingfield a domestic estate built around two courtyards.
Over the inner entrance were carved the twin moneybags that were the symbol of Cromwell's status as Chancellor. Perhaps the most impressive part of the surviving structure is the undercroft of the hall, with a vaulted roof supported on strong ribbed pillars.
