  Hinton Ampner House & Garden
We had the pleasure of visiting here, and our information is based on our personal experiences
Hinton Ampner House & Garden

It is rare that a stately home is the result of a single man's vision, but Hinton Ampner house and the lovely gardens that surround it are very much the result of one man's passion for Georgian style. Ralph Dutton (1898-1985) grew up in the Victorian pile fashioned by his grandfather from an earlier 18th century house. That house, in turn, was built on the site of a Tudor manor first leased by Dutton's ancestor, Sir Thomas Stewkley in 1597.
Historic House: The house is tenanted but can also be visited and contains a fine collection of English furniture, Italian paintings and hard-stones.

  Mottisfont Abbey

Mottisfont Abbey

The National Collection of Roses calls the grounds of this 12th century abbey home. The estate includes Mottisfont village and surrounding farmland and woods. The park features the largest London plane tree in England, plus small formal gardens.
Abbey: This 12th-century Augustinian priory was converted into a private house after the Dissolution and still retains the spring or 'font' from which its name is derived. The abbey contains a drawing-room decorated by Rex Whistler and Derek Hill's 20th-century picture collection but the key attraction is the grounds with magnificent trees, walled gardens and the National Collection of Old-fashioned Roses. The estate includes Mottisfont village and surrounding farmland and woods.

Queen Eleanor's Garden

Tucked neatly in a narrow space behind the Great Hall of Winchester Castle is a quiet gem, Queen Eleanor's Gardens. This peaceful oasis is an accurate recreation of an early medieval garden, complete with many features that would have been present during the 13th century, and all the plants are known to have been grown in that period. more...

  The Vyne

The Vyne

Built in the early 16th-century for Lord Sandys, Henry VIII's Lord Chamberlain, the house acquired a classical portico in the mid-17th-century (the first of its kind in England). It contains a fascinating Tudor chapel with Renaissance glass, a Palladian stircase and a wealth old panelling and fine furniture. The attractive grounds feature herbaceous borders and a wild garden with lawns, lakes and woodland walks.
Garden: 50,000 new snowdrops! Gardening at the Vyne is on a grand scale that humbles one's own visit to the garden centre... Large and varied country park to explore, from formal gardens to meadows, woods and wetlands.
