Dane John Mound photo, Dane John Mound

Dane John (the odd name comes from the French for donjon, or keep) is the older of two castles in Canterbury. It was erected soon after the Norman Conquest on a site that had been used by the Romans. The castle mound was rebuilt in stone under William II and relocated a short distance away (see Canterbury Castle). The original Norman motte of Dane John still stands, however, just inside the city walls in a public park.
