Victorian house built on the ruins of a medieval castle slighted by Parliamentary troops in the Civil War. The castle was used by Prince Rupert as a base in the war; now only the shell of the banqueting hall survives. In the house are mementoes of Catherine Parr, who died here, and Charles I, who might have wished he had. Worth a visit.
Garden: Be sure to plan in time to explore the award-winning gardens, during your visit to Sudeley. There are 14 acres of carefully planned and lovingly executed plantings, divided into 10 distinct garden areas. In spring the White garden is a flood of tulips; the Queen's garden grows a splendid array of roses set among double yew hedges; the sheltered Secret Garden provides a home for semi-tender Mediterranean plantings which are glorious well into the autumn. The pheasantry and wildfowl area opened in 2004 is home to 15 species of rare and endangered pheasants. The gardens are managed on organic principles. more details ...
