St John the Baptist, Bere Regis, is one of the finest country churches in Dorset, and is full of historic interest. It seems likely that there was a church here in Saxon times, but the present building was begun around 1050 AD. Over the subsequent centuries that Saxon vhurch was rebuilt and remodelled into a very pleasing ix of styles.

A country church, yet close to Bridport, Holy Trinity has its roots firmly in the medieval period. There are two churches in Bothenhampton; this is the Old Church, which fell out of use after a new church was built by ES Prior in 1889. Indeed, for a short time the chancel of the old church was used as a mortuary chapel.

There are no wonderfully historic features in the simple parish church at Chalbury; no ancient font or recently discovered medieval wall paintings. What you will find instead is a very pretty, almost completely unaltered Georgian interior. It is that unaltered Georgian state that makes Chalbury so interesting.
This wonderful Norman church was rebuilt around 1252 in Early English style. It stands beside the site occupied but a Benedictine priory as early as the late Saxon period. The imposing west tower was built with a bequest from the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester in 1440, and their arms appear by the west door.

There are three Gussage villages, and the church at All Saints is the largest of them all. Much of the building is 14th and 15th century, restored in the Victorian period. The font, however, is Norman, and the 18th century organ came from Westminster Abbey. On the floor of the nave are a pair of brass memorial inscriptions, one to Isabella Whitwood (d. 1508), and the other to Richard Lane (d. 1754).

The church of St Wolfrida in Horton is a peculiar L-shape, the legacy of a Georgian rebuilding of an earlier medieval church. The first church here was part of a medieval Horton Abbey, but in 1401 a new church was built upon the same site. That 15th century church consisted of a nave, chancel, and north transept. By 1722 the church was in a ruinous condition, so it was almost completely rebuilt in the then popular neo-classical Georgian style.
A fascinating historic site consisting of a ruined medieval church standing within the remains of a Neolithic henge earthwork. The juxtaposition of the Norman church and the prehistoric henge monument represents a quite striking combination of Christian and pre-Christian history.

It is hard to imagine a more beautifully situated church than Milton Abbey. It is set in a bowl of wooded hills, seemingly miles from anywhere. The first church at Milton was founded in 933 by Athelstan, King of Wessex. Athelstan may have ben prompted by guiilt over the death of his brother Edwin, who was lost at sea.
There was a church at Moreton as early as 1190 when a chapel of ease was built here, with priests coming from Sherborne and Bindon Abbey. The first rector was appointed in 1298. The current building is almost entirely a product of the late 18th century, and was designed by James Frampton (d. 1784). Memorials to members of the Frampton family are set upon the wall of the Trinity Chapel.
