Osmund, Bishop of Salisbury built a Norman wooden pallisade castle here in 1080, but this burned down and was replaced in 1120 by Roger, Bishop of Salisbury. The castle was at the heart of 12th century civil war as rival claimants Queen Matilda and KIng Stephen vied for the throne, and Devizes was taken and retaken several times. Five centuries later the castle was besieged by Parliamentary forces several times and was finally taken by Cromwell. Parliament ordered the castle to be slighted, and all that remains today is the mound with visible foundations. A later mock castle was built but this has been turned into private flats and canot be visited.

Ludgershall Castle was built in the late 11th century, by Edward of Salisbury, the Sheriff of Wiltshire. Edward's fortress was composed of two side by side enclosures, the southern one of which may date to the Iron Age. The inner fortress enclosures were set within a pair of concentric earthwork banks and ditches. Around 1100 Ludgershall became royal property, managed on behalf of the king by a custodian, or castellan. The first castellan was John the Marshall (d. 1165), who added the second (north) inner enclosure and strengthened the fortifications.

In 1075 Bishop Osmund built a cathedral at Old Sarum, beneath the mighty Norman castle. The cathedral lasted until 1220, when the current cathedral of Salisbury was built a few miles to the south. Old Sarum is approached via an opening in two high Iron Age banks, which obscure the site from outside, and give it the air of a mysterious hidden castle.
