Norfolk Churches Trust

I learned something today; Norfolk has the greatest concentration of medieval churches in the world. During the medieval period an estimated 921 churches were built, but of these only 659 remain.

This information comes courtesy of a group set up to preserve and maintain Norfolk's unrivalled collection of historic churches, the Norfolk Churches Trust. The Trust was set up in 1976, a few years after a similar group was set up in nearby Suffolk. The Trust assists local groups to repair, restore, and maintain churches through a programme of grants and advice.

Like the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust, the Norfolk group relies on donations from members of the public, including bequests in wills. The Trust also puts on an annual Sponsored Bicycle Ride and Walk to raise money and public awareness. The Trust patron is HRH The Prince of Wales, and vice-patrons include The Duke of Norfolk, The Bishop of Norwich, and The Bishop of Ely.

The Trust can be reached at 9 The Old Church, St Matthews Road, Norwich, Norfolk, NR1 1SP or online at http://www.norfolkchurchestrust.co.uk/
