History of Scotland Guide

I just got back from 3 glorious weeks in the Scottish Highlands (glorious except for the wind, which actually blew me off my feet on one memorable occasion!). When the weather - always a dodgy thing to predict in the north - turned unpleasant, I whiled away the hours writing a guide to the History of Scotland. It's a project that's been on the back burner for quite some time, and it finally made it to the top of my to-do list.

Now I don't claim any great scholarly content; my guide to Scottish history isn't intended to be some dry academic study (thank goodness). I've read enough of those in the past to turn anyone off history! No, what I've tried to do is lay out in simple terms an outline of Scottish heritage, something that will help give you some general background on the major themes, events, and people that have helped shape the Scotland we know today.

The guide starts in the dim recesses of the past, with the first settlers in the northern reaches of the British Isles, and takes the story up to the Victorian period. Along the way, I look at early Scottish kingdoms, the coming of Christianity, the turbulent medieval period, and social changes such as the Industrial Revolution and the Highland Clearances. I gained a much greater appreciation of Scottish heritage through researching and writing the guide, and I hope it will do the same for you.

Here's the History of Scotland home page.
