Cadhay
A lovely Elizabethan manor acclaimed as one of England's thousand best houses. Cadhay was begun in 1550 by John Haydon, on the site of an older house. To Haydon's house was later added a long gallery, effectively creating a rectangular building around an inner courtyard. The house has been beautifully restored and furnished and now operates as holiday accommodation, but visitors are welcome at regular opening times (see website).

Unexceptional exterior houses a varied collection - no, not of furniture and objets d'art, as you might expect, but of stuffed birds, mammals, fossils, and other oddments gathered by a succession of eccentric owners.

Capesthorne Hall
Capesthorne is one of the premier country homes of Cheshire, with a history going back to the Domesday Book. The house is a magnificent Jacobean style building built in 1722. The Capesthorne family were Chief Foresters in the King's Forest of Macclesfield at that time, which meant they had the power to try and sentence poachers and enforce royal privilege in the area. Though the exterior of the house retains elements of its 18th century character, much remodeling was performed by the architect Salvin after a disastrous fire of 1861. The interior of the house boasts a fine collection of antique furniture, art, marble sculpture, and tapestries.

Castle Howard

Here is John Vanbrugh's extraordinary baroque vision realized in all its extravagance for the 3rd Earl of Carlisle. One of the very first landscape gardens was built here, and there are paintings by Gainsborough and Rubens. The huge central dome has been restored after a 20th century fire.

Chambercombe Manor
A true treasure of England's past, Chambercombe Manor was built in the 11th century, and was mentioned in the Domesday Book. Elizabethan furniture shares the interior with later Victorian decor. Lady Jane Grey is known to have visited the house. Chambercombe is supposedly haunted; in the Victorian period a secret room was discovered, and legend says that a body lay upon a bed in the room.

Charleston
A glimpse into the fascinating (and occassionally scandalous) history of the Bloomsbury Group of artists and writers. Charleston was the country meeting place of the Bloomsbury Group. The interiors were decorated by artists Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell with murals, painted furniture, ceramics, and textiles, making the whole a unique statement of their artistic beliefs.

Chicheley Hall
An outstanding example of a Georgian manor house, Chicheley was begun in 1719 by Sir John Chester. The ceiling of the great hall is especially outstanding; this was the work of William Kent, and depicts Herse and her sisters sacrificing to Flora. The manor is surrounded by 100 acres of lawn and parkland, with 25 acres of gardens, and is notable for the unique canal on the east side of the house.

Chilham Castle
There has been a castle of some description at Chilham since the early 8th century, but of those early fortresses little is known. There was a stone-built castle here at the time of the Norman invasion, and an extensive medieval castle. Of the medieval buildings only the octagonal keep remains. The bulk of the castle we see today was created by Sir Dudley Digges in the early 17th century. Digges created a grand house in the Italian Renaissance style which was then fashionable.

Compton Castle
A fantastic fortified manor house, bristling with turrets and parapets, lies in a sheltered valley setting. Compton Castle was built by the Gilbert family, and the same family still inhabits the house today, though now the property is owned by the National Trust. The castle is surrounded by lush gardens, including a period knot garden. Compton Castle was used in the filming of the 1995 film adaptation of Janer Austen's Sense and Sensibility.

Cotehele
A Tudor house approached by way of a medieval barn, gatehouse, and three courtyards. Not much has changed since it was built between 1485 and 1539: the floors slope, the rooms are dark, and there is no electricity. Wonderful Tudor atmosphere, great hall doubles as an armoury. Tudor and later wooden furnishings. Working water mill on grounds, with wooded walks.

Crook Hall
The original Crook Hall was built around 1286 on lands belonging to Sydgate Manor. The property was eventually named after Peter de Croke, owner in the early years of the 14th century. Only the great hall and a screen passage remain from that early medieval building, but they are enough to give a good impression of the first Crook Hall. You can easily see where the old medieval doorways have been filled in. The screen passage leads to a Jacobean addition.
