Cottesbrooke Hall and Gardens

Travel Information and nearby accommodation

Cottesbrooke Hall and Gardens A lovely Queen Anne house of red brick, built in 1702, and featuring lovely wrought-iron work and striking Rococo papeier-mache decoration. Cottesbrooke is reputed to be the model for Jane Austen's Mansfield Park in the novel of the same name.

Woolavington Collection
One of the features of Cottesbrooke is the wonderful compilation of sporting prints known as the Woolavington Collection, thought to be the largest in Europe, and one of the largest such collections in the world. The collection was begun by Sir James Buchanan, later Lord Woolavington, hence the name. Included in the Woolavington Collection are works bty such well-known sporting artists as George Stubbs, Sir Alfred Munnings, Ben Marshall, and many more.

In addition to the Woolvavington Collection, there is period furniture on display plus lovely European and Chinese porcelain.

The house is set in lovely 18th century landscape gardens, with carefully arranged vistas over the park and lakes. Who designed the gardens is a mystery, but they are very much in the grand style of 18th century landscape gardening popularized by Humphrey Repton and Capability Brown, among others. There is a formal garden area near the house, as well as a wild garden, statue walk, Pool Garden, Philosophers Garden, Dutch Garden, and a Secret Garden.

Cottesbrooke also hosts a Plant Finders Fair during the summer, where avid gardeners can find rare and unusual plants for sale, and visitors can join in a Plant Swap.
