Splendid I never usually write reviews but seeing as I've stayed at this cottage on 3 occasions now I believe it's about time. We all fell in love with this house and this village. Myself and my husband have been looking for a village to retire in for the past 2 years. Although the property here was a little on the high side for us we have our hearts set on Holt now. The location is fantastic it seems central to everything great for when our grandchildren visit and great for shopping with Bath only 10 or 15 mins away. This cottage has a wonderful feel light and airy modern and old. It's taken us 3 visits to learn how to use the smart tv but now we have it's so easy to go online and plan your holiday. Always a few supplies waiting for us on arrival and they owners are always helpful with check in and out times. We loved the kitchen. Beautiful appliances and they even supply baking equipment for making cakes. We just love it. Looking forward to our next visit in September. mrsmop2017 2017-05-19
Mrs Where do I start? This is by far the worst accommodation we have ever stayed in.
Eight of us stayed here in October: 4 adults and 4 children aged 10-14.
When we first entered the property, we quickly realised that it was filthy. Everything was filthy, from the floors to the bathrooms - even the fridge was disgusting (that included a selection of out of date/half used items, even eggs with a date stamp of august...). Everything was covered in a layer of dirt and dust, therefore we spent the first 3 hours cleaning . And by 3 hours, I mean 12 really because there were 4 of us adults who cleaned for 3 hours each. The hoover however 'blew' more than it 'sucked' so this therefore took even longer.
The towels were disgusting - we quickly realised we wouldn't be able to use them in such a state so put them in the washing machine - another chore to be done. The bed sheets were bobbly. Our children layed on their dressing gowns every night.
The first night we had chosen to cook a meal in. This was possibly the worst equipped kitchen ever! Supposedly accommodates 8, there were only 2 dinner plates and 2 wine glasses to give you an idea. And a filthy oven. No large saucepans or baking trays. We then went to sit down round the table in the dining room and realised that there were only 4 chairs (this accommodates 8 remember? No picture of the dining room on the Sykes Cottages website...). So we got 4 chairs in from the garden - more cleaning as clearly hadn't been used for a while, covered in insects, dirt etc. And also they were completely the wrong height for the table and didn't fit properly around it.
The off road parking was a joke. The cottage details claim that 2 cars can park in front of the property. Well we did park there but our cars overhang onto the footpath and every time we parked, the under carriage of our cars scraped on the kerb. On our fifth day of doing this, part of the car's under carriage fell off.
The cottage claims to have a computer; at no point did we ever see this. There were, however, used hair clippers in the bedroom - yuck!!! And plenty of out of date food in the cupboards too. For example, coffee was left for us - this was rock hard in the bottom of the storage pot.
The heating was a joke. At no point did it ever come on when it was supposed to. The timer NEVER worked, we always had to do it manually - and then not all the radiators worked consistently.
They had no smoke alarm upstairs - completely illegal.
I could go on.
Why did we stay here and not demand somewhere else? (Most people would have) . We carefully chose this cottage due to its' location - close to pub, shop, attractions etc - so we didn't want to be somewhere else. Also - are all of Sykes cottages like this anyway? (Our first experience of this particular company). We soon found out that this cottage was new on the market with them (explained a lot). Did they come out and do a check? No.
And I think that was probably the cherry on the top for us. At no point did the owner accept any responsibility for the state or upkeep of the property. He was supposed to meet us on our arrival. We were 30 minutes later than planned due to traffic - he was already 2 and a half hours away! He rudely claimed that it had been cleaned and was offended by our comments. A Very unapproachable owner.
Over the week, we spent a large part of our holiday contacting Sykes cottages. They were exasperated with the owner too and claimed that they couldn't do anything. It was all a bit of a disaster really. We definitely won't be booking with them again. A TripAdvisor Member 2016-12-16
