After researching the surrounding area and looking through the delightful pictures of the cottage I was most excited to be staying somewhere so quaint for our mini break from the 27th-30th of July but unfortunately I was disappointed. Firstly the parking is an issue, and we struggled to find anywhere nearby where we could park, in the end we had to quickly throw our bags through the door and park the other end of the village in the public car park which wouldn't have been too bad apart from having to walk back up in the torrential rain!! Secondly the pictures are very misleading and the cottage isn't quite as inviting once you've walked through the front door. The outside area compared to the pictures looks very bare and boring. Our biggest issue was the obvious signs of vermin and the uncleanliness. Whilst trying to sleep at night the scurrying noises above led us to believe there was large rodents in the attic area, possibly squirrels but non the less very unnerving. There was also an issue with rodent droppings in the kitchen area. Speaking to a few "locals" this has been an issue for some time!! The heating also seemed to have a mind of its own and one minute it was scorching then next it was freezing, the thermostat on the wall seemed to be useless and we were unable to control the temperature at all. All in all we were very disappointed.
Darwin Cottage was the most comfortable self catering cottage we have ever stayed in. The kitchen had everything we needed and the dining/sun room was just lovely. The cottage was always warm, the perfect place the chill out.
We couldn't have been any happier, it was just what we needed. The attention to detail was perfect. We honestly didn't want to leave.
Ok but faults
Darwin cottage comes close, the problem that I have with such a lovely cottage in beautiful tranquil scenic surroundings is the issue of heating.
Do the owners of this cottage sit in their own house and have the heating on for 1-2 hours a day.We have stayed in cottages in Southern France,The Cotsworlds and Yorkshire Dales and have never experienced this problem where you pay $$$$ for accomodation and have the heating regulated by the owners.
Why have such a lovely property and ruin it for those people who rent it ? Just adjust the rent accordingly we would have been only to happy to pay extra to make for an unforgettable week in the positive rather than the negative.
We very much enjoyed our stay in Darwin Cottage. It's a very cosy getaway in all weathers - we were only there for three nights but in that time enjoyed both the lovely wood burner and the bright and sunny breakfast room. The cottage has all the atmosphere and character you'd want from a period property like this but is also well-equipped and comfortable. On the day we were rained off we were very happy to be indoors and the kitchen was well-organised and easy to use - we would definitely recommend stocking up on the excellent local produce and eating in. Llansilin is perfectly situated amid the beautiful rolling landscape of the border country and there are many footpaths nearby into the hills and down to the river valley. We look forward to returning.
