We booked this holiday property because of the description on Sykes website. It described it as "quirky" and played up the fact it was an old Station Master's accommodation next to a railway station. It cost us over ?400 to rent this place. However, upon arrival it became clear the description was rather exaggarated, really over rated... There was nothing special about it at all. There was nothing, absolutely nothing in the flat that depicted its history, no picures, no photos, nothing. Plain painted walls, cheap furniture, ancient plates and cups. Cheap bed and bedding. No bedding covers were provided for the sofa bed. The fridge had food dumped from the previous holiday makers. No hoover is provided. The information book is poor, no visitor book is provided and we could see no sign of a fire risk assessment or a fire extinguisher or a fire blanket, which we found rather concerning. One of the windows was in a poor condition - it was rather hard to open and close as the handles were practically hanging off. The white painted table and chairs we avoided as they were very, very sticky - when we placed the fan on one of the chairs and picked it up to move, the rubber feet stayed behind as they had stuck to the sticky chair!
Sadly, there is no view available of the train station and tracks below as the roof blocks it. So you wouldn't know you were staying in such a place - bland flat and no view, we could have been anywhere. We drove a long way to stay here, it most certainly was not worth it.
Super flat for railway buffs, walkers & cyclists
We stayed in the flat for a week and thoroughly enjoyed it. Not only was there the interest of the railway itself, oozing nostalgia of its former Southern Railway glory, but it was also convenient to travel by car to both north and south coasts of Devon/Cornwall through lovely countryside. You quickly realise that Okehampton has become a centre for cycling and walking over and around Dartmoor, with fine nearby views of Yes Tor and other summits. Okehampton town centre (with 3 supermarkets) is a10-minute downhill walk away.
The flat has everything you need: a double bedroom with an en-suite toilet, bath & shower; and the kitchen/dining/lounge area - the latter having a comfortable double sofa bed for two more people. Clean towels, sheets, cleaning materials etc were all provided. We found the flat simply decorated, but clean and tidy on our arrival. All the station staff and volunteers we dealt with were very friendly and helpful. Even Percy, the station cat was friendly too, although we didn't let him into the flat! On the main station, the Bulleid Buffet is open 10-4 weekdays and 9-6 weekends, serving all-day breakfasts, light lunches and teas/coffees.
Note, anyone with mobility issues might have difficulty here as the flat is accessed by a staircase and there is no lift.
On the Sunday of our stay, we exploited the benefit of the summer-only 50+ mile through rail round trip to Exeter for a ?6 adult return fare, and although the 2-car diesel unit wasn't quite the Atlantic Coast Express, it didn't hang about on either the Dartmoor Railway (about 14 miles) and then Network Rail metals beyond Coleford. There was also the Dartmoor Railway's own shuttle train to Meldon Quarry, just beyond which is a fantastic viaduct over the West Okement River (now sadly downgraded to a foot & cycle path). However, should you have no interest in the railway, you would not find its presence a disturbance.
If you dream that one day the Government will re-instate this line into the national rail network (as an alternative between Exeter & Plymouth, avoiding the present oft-threatened route via Dawlish sea wall) you would be well advised to stay here whilst the going is good...
