The small village of Brentor is famous for its medieval parish church of St Michaeel de Rupe, which stands on a rocky tor overlooking the Burn valley. The tor is all that remains of an ancient volcano. There are actually two parish churches, but it is the older 12th century building which draws visitors. The climb to the top is short and steep, but the views are fabulous. The church ios the fourth smallest in England at only 40 feet in length, but it stands at a higher elevation (340 metres) than any other.

The church here was begun in the 11th century, but most of what remains is the result of rebuilding between 1275-1375. The Lady chapel and retrochoir were added at this time, to be followed by the presbytery and the choir. The nave was built in the mid 14th century, under the direction of Richard Farleigh, who was also responsible for the spire at Salisbury. The vaulting extends for an extraordinary 300 feet, making it the longest uninterrupted stone vault in Britain. The carving is wonderful, particularly in the Minstrel's gallery (look for the 14 angels, each carrying a different musical instrument) and the pulpitum.

An unexpected medieval and 18th century treasure in a corner of Exeter's Cathedral Close, St Martin's dates to the 11th century. The first church here was dedicated in 1065, the year before the Norman Conquest by Bishop Leofric, who also founded the nearby cathedral. Signs of the original Saxon stonework can still be seen in places.

A surprisingly large and spacious historic church in an isolated rural setting, approached by winding country lanes. One very unusual feature of Torbryan church is that it was built in a single 20 year span, from 1450-1470, and as a reesult the building is a strikingly unified Perpendicular Gothic structure.
