Brayford Pool
The historic waterfront area of Lincoln marks the point where the Roman Fossdyke meets the River Witham to link Lincoln to the sea. Attractive walkways now line the Pool area, which is known for its population of mute swans. Near Brayside is the 15th century Witch and Wardrobe pub, which is - apparently - haunted by a pair of ill-fated lovers, and a playful poltergeist.

Cardinal's Hat and Dernstall House
This pair of historic buildings stand at the start of The Strait section of Lincoln's Steep Hill. The Cardinal's Hat is a 15th century three story building with a lower story of brick and a timber-framed upper two floors. Like many 1late medieval and Tudor buildings, the upper floors of the Cardinal's Hat lean out over the lower floor in an attempt to maximize street frontage space. Dernstall House contains masonry dating from the 12th century.

Exchequer Gate, Lincoln
A fine 13th/14th century gateway between Castle Square and the Minster Yard that surrounds Lincoln Cathedral. The gate was so named because in the Middle Ages tenants of the cathedral gathered here to pay their rents, and a chequered cloth of alternating black and white squares was used to aide the counting.

Greyfriars

The oldest Franciscan church building in England, Greyfriars originally served as the infirmary hall for the monks who formed one of four friaries in medieval Lincoln. The friary was begun around 1237, and completed about 40 years later. Today it is used for regular exhibitions of Lincolnshire archaeology and local history.

Jews Court
A lovely stone building, probably dating to the 17th or possibly the 18th century. The building takes its name from the fact that a synagogue stood near the site in the early Middle Ages. An alternative theory is that Jews Court is actually built upon the site of a 12th century synagogue. Beside Jews Court is Jews House, an 11th century building which may be the oldest occupied house in Europe.

Jews House

A lovely stone building, possibly the oldest occupied house in Europe. Jews House was built around 1150 and takes its name from the fact that it was owned by a Jewish woman named Bellaset in the late 13th century. Medieval Bishop's Palace
The medieval Bishop's Palace was the home of the powerful Bishops of Lincoln from 1150 until it was destroyed following the English Civil War. The medieval palace ruins stand a stone's throw from the cathedral. The palace was enlarged and remodelled by Bishop Hugh of Avalon, who was later canonized as Great St Hugh. The best remaining part of the palace is the west hall, with its fine undercroft, and three service doors at the south end of the hall.

Norman House, Lincoln
A lovely old Norman building, one of the oldest in the country originally built for habitation. Norman House was built in the late 12th century, and was thought for many years to have been the home of the wealthy Jewish financier, Aaron of Lincoln. This is now thought to be unlikely. The building is now occupied by a shop.

Priory Gate
Priory Gate marks the location of one of the old medieval gates that gave access to the close surrounding Lincoln Cathedral. The current gateway, which straddles the north end of Pottergate, is a Victorian structure replacing the earlier medieval gateway here. The gate stands a few short steps away from a statue of Alfred, Lord Tennyson, a Lincolnshire native.
