Greater Churches Network | Historic Churches in England

There are so many organisations across Britain which focus on one aspect or another of our heritage. I just became aware of another, and this one intrigues me. The Greater Churches Network is a group of over 30 of our most historic churches - but not including cathedrals. For the most part, the member churches of the GCN exhibit all the characteristics of a cathedral - historic interest, large size, lots of visitors - but they are not actually cathedrals; they are just, um, 'great' churches.

The Greater Churches Network website is geared as much towards the churches themselves as it is towards people interested in visiting these historic buildings, but there are useful resources to help you plan a trip. Included are a location map for each church, an overview of the church, and a link to each church's own website for more details.

Current members of the Greater Churches Network include:

There are some fascinating churches in that group - not all of them, it must be said, are of great age or particular historical interest, but most are. Hmm, looking at the list I can see some gaping holes in the places we have managed to visit so far. Looks like time to plan more trips!
