Maureen Jenner - meet the author

I was born in Wales in 1936, and attended grammar school in Wales and went to university in London where I met and later married a fellow student. We moved to Dublin where my husband studied medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons.

Almost eight years later we returned to live in UK with our two children. I resumed my teaching career which eventually led to a headship: my husband pursued post graduate studies that would lead him to a consultancy at the Sussex Eye Hospital in Brighton.

Over the years we travelled widely in Europe. I was fascinated by the culture of various nationalities and the music of their languages. I found great pleasure in picking up sufficient survival vocabulary that enabled me to communicate with the people I met. I decided to study for a post graduate diploma so that I could teach English to foreign students. Once qualified, I began teaching students from all over the world at the English Language Centre in Hove, Sussex and am still in regular contact with many who have become old friends.

Eventually, my husband retired and we went to live in Cyprus where I remained for several years after my husband’s death: acquiring several stray pets; most of whom were near starvation and generally pretty delapidated. I returned to UK in 1997 and found my present home on a beautiful Welsh hill top in 1998, bringing my surviving pets with me who underwent the trauma of quarantine .

Now, the move complete, I live with three large, lovely, lively dogs and one small cat who is convinced she’s one of the pack. They roam freely within the boundaries of the large fenced field, which is gradually becoming a garden, and in the middle of which, sits our home.

I decided this was beauty worth sharing and an idea was born. Why not encourage foreign students of English to:

1. Come and enjoy a holiday while learning or improving their language skills.
2. Learn something about Wales; its people and their history.
3. See its ancient castles; churches and monuments.
4. Walk amongst some of the world’s most beautiful scenery.
5. Experience the warmth of Welsh hospitality.
6. All under the personal guidance of their own teacher.
