Arbroath, Central Scotland Location map Arbroath Abbey Originally a priory founded in 1178 by William the Lion (buried here) and dedicated to Thomas á Becket. The Declaration of Ar`broath (1320) that stated the independence of Scotland following the Battle of Bannockburn was drawn up in the abbey. Remains include gatehouse, entrance towers, south transept, abbey guesthouse, the Regality Tower - a fortress and prison of the abbey-and the only surviving abbot's house in Scotland, now a museum. In 1951 the stolen Stone of Destiny turned up on the altar.
