The North York Moors is an area of fantastic natural beauty; by turns bleak and forbidding, then lush and colourful. The area enclosed by the park is essentially a high plateau bordered by the Vale of Pickering and the Vale of York to the south, and by the Plain of Cleveland to the north. The best time to visit is in July and August when the moors turn brilliant purple with blooming heather.
