05/01/2004 Entry: "Jersey Revels 2004"
Jersey Celebrates Anniversary The Channel Island of Jersey this year celebrates the 800th anniversary of its independence from the English parliament with events including medieval re-enactments, a siege of Mont Orgueil Castle, jousting on the green, demonstrations of medieval crafts, falconry, a medieval market, and more.
In 1204, the citizens of Jersey chose to remain loyal to King John when he lost his Normandy lands: their reward, independence from the English parliament, resulted in the island's own autonomous government. Jersey still recognises the UK monarch, but their loyal toast is to "the Queen our Duke". A highlight of the anniversary events will be the Jersey Revels (June 25-27) in and around Mont Orgueil Castle - they will include medieval re-enactments, a siege of the castle, jousting on the green, demonstrations of medieval crafts, falconry, a medieval market, entertainment and dancing.
Other events include an exhibition, in English and French, at the Jersey Museum (April 6 - Oct.17) telling the island's history from 1204 to 1483; guided walks in St. Helier (Apr. - Nov.29) and at twice-besieged Mont Orgueil (Apr. 7 - Sept. 28); concerts and lectures. Another Jersey event is the famous Battle of Flowers (Aug.13-19).
