Guernsey Autumn Walking Week
Channel Islands Walking Extravaganza From 10-18 September, the Channel Island of Guernsey celebrates Autumn Walking Week, a programme of guided walks accompanied by accredited guides focusing on different aspects of natural life and history of the islands.
There are more than 35 walks to choose from, both inland and coastal. Some are themed to examine aspects of Guernseys rich history, including smuggling and German fortifications. Follow in the footsteps of well-known Guernsey-philes including French exile Victor Hugo, and the artist Renoir.
Some walks involve a boat trip to Guernseys islands of Sark and Herm, which offer a different pace of life, and contrasting scenery. All abilities are catered for with walks of different lengths and levels of difficulty.
Walks last from an hour to a full day and are graded as easy, medium or hard. Each walk costs 4 per participant, redeemable if you take part in 4 or more walks owing to sponsorship of Guernseys Walking Week from Healthy Direct, the vitamin and supplement specialist based in St Peter Port. Simply get your guide to fill in the Walking Week Form, and return it to Healthy Direct.
To coincide with Autumn Walking Week, Guernsey has its Ale and Food Festival, allowing walkers to quench their thirsts, restore energy levels, and rest tired feet. During the festival which runs from 3 18 September, restaurants and pubs will be offering a selection of great ales and ale inspired dishes.
Other events coinciding with Autumn Walking Week are the Battle Of Britain Air Display (15 September) and the CI Traders Guernsey Regatta week (2-11 September), so any walkers needing to take the weight of their feet have plenty to look at.
The Autumn Walking Week event follows the success of Guernseys Spring Walking Week in May which attracted around 500 walkers, a 50% increase on 2004.
