The Story Behind the Image - Ullswater Sunrise
The morning sun paints the eastern sky lovely shades of orange as it rises over the hills surrounding Ullswater, in the eastern Lake District.
If you read the 'Story Behind the Image' for many of the photos in our shop you will find a lot of stories that begin, 'I got up at [fill in a ridiculously early time here] and drove [an absurd number of miles] to get this photo'.
Well, to get this photo I got up at 3 am and drove for 60 minutes. It was worth every bit of it!
The longer version is that I was on my way home from a wonderful photography trip to the Scottish Highlands and had to break my journey near Penrith.
Now, after a busy two weeks photographing the Highlands most people would be sensible enough to relax and get a good night's sleep in the Travelodge on the M6.
I, however, am not sensible. I decided to make the most of being close to the Lake District and set my alarm for 3 am.
I think the night clerk had his doubts about my sanity, but if so, he didn't express them, and I was out the door by 3:15 and on my way to the shore of Ullswater, north of Glenridding, to get this photo as the sun broke over the horizon.
