Located at the junction of the Severn and Avon rivers, Tewkesbury is best known for its superb abbey church of St Mary the Virgin, which has the tallest Norman tower in England. The abbey itself is gone, dissolved by Henry VIII, but the church was saved from destruction when the townsfolk of Tewkesbury bought it to be their parish church.
