Ogmore Castle

The Story Behind the Image - Ogmore Castle

Photographers are funny beasts. We plan and prepare and scheme to catch the perfect photo, inspired by photos taken by those who have gone before us. One of the things I've [slowly] learned from decades of photography is that you have to be ready to throw your preconceptions out the window when you arrive at your destination to find that the light is in the wrong place, or non-existent.

That was the case with this photo of Ogmore Castle, one of a group of small medieval castles scattered around the Gower Peninsula in southern Wales.

Like hundreds of photographers before me, I drove to Ogmore fully intending to photograph the castle from across the river, with a series of picturesque stepping stones leading the viewer's eye towards the medieval ruins on the far bank.

When I arrived, however, the light was unexciting, and though I took my preconceived photo, I wasn't terribly enthralled by it. It was only after leaving the river that I really opened my eyes to see that an even better photo presented itself, in the form of horses grazing peacefully on the landward side of the castle.

I love this beautiful pastoral scene of horses grazing in the fields and the afternoon sun hitting the castle in the distance.
