Abbeys and Monasteries in Berkshire

Once among the wealthiest monasteries in Europe, Reading Abbey was founded in 1121 by Henry I. The king was buried by the high altar in 1135. The abbey was suppressed by Henry VIII in 1539, but enough remains to give a good idea of its original size and impressive architecture.
