Wingfield Manor is a ruined 15th-century manor house built for Ralph, Lord Cromwell (see Tattershall Castle). The house was purchased by the Earls of Shrewsbury after Cromwell's death. It was abandoned in the 18th century, though a farmhouse was later built in part of the cross range. Wingfield is best known for its association with Mary, Queen of Scots, who was imprisoned here on two occasions, in 1569 and 1584-5
