The best countryside in Staffordshire borders on, or is part of, the Peak District National Park.
The National Trust's Ilam estate hosts a country park, popular with walkers, set around the remains of a 19th-century mansion, now a youth hostel. The Trust maintains an Italianate garden beside the Hall, and walking trails to nearby Dovedale. Within the Park is Holy Cross church, built around the shrine of St Bertram, with two Saxon crosses in the churchyard.
