Clare Castle is a Norman motte built by Richard Fitzgilbert, cousin of William the Conqueror. That first wooden castle was rebuilt in stone by the de Clare family in the 13th century. Remnants of the 13th century stone keep stand atop the castle motte, with a short section of the medieval wall.
