Lochranza Castle, Arran

The Story Behind the Image - Lochranza Castle, Isle of Arran

Lochranza Castle isn't actually a castle; it is a medieval tower house perched in a picturesque location on the edge of the water at Lochranza, on the northern tip of the Isle of Arran.

The castle is just about the most photogenic fortress in Argyll (Castle Stalker might give it a good run for its money). On this occasion the sunrise lit the sky with shades of pink and gold, making for wonderful reflections in the water.

I was staying for the week at a holiday cottage at Imachar, on the north-western coast of Arran. To capture this scene I had to get up well before dawn and drive up the coast in the dark.

I almost didn't make it in time because I was distracted by a herd of wild deer that were grazing close to the road. I tried to photograph the deer from my car to avoid startling them, but in the end, the light was so dim that I didn't get any good photos.

By the time I arrived at Lochranza, however, the sky was turning wonderful shades of vivid blue and orange, so I'd say it worked out pretty well!
