Northumberland is home to some of the finest medieval castles in England, particularly along the coast, where fortresses such as Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh are situated in striking locations overlooking the sea.
Begun as a Norman motte and bailey castle, what we see now is a 14th-century fortress showcasing the power of the Percy family, Earls of Northumberland. The most imnpressive feature is the Great Tower, built in 1377 by the 1st Percy Earl of Northumberland.
