Bolsover stands on a high ridge looking west towards the Derbyshire Peak District. The first castle was built shortly after the Norman Conquest, but the current buildings are largely 17th century, the work of Sir Charles Cavendish and his son William Cavendish, the first Duke of Devonshire.
