It is a shame that Herstmonceux Castle is not regularly open to the public. It is such an imposing structure, and the 15th century moated site is easily one of the most attractive in the south of England. The castle sits in extensive formal and informal gardens, and you can walk around most of the buildings and get a good idea of the site.
