The oldest section of St Martins is the south west corner of the chancel, behind the row of chairs in this photo, where the brickwork almost certainly predates the arrival of St Augustine in 597 AD. It is entirely possible that this was a Romano-Christian church and was simply adapted by Queen Bertha and St Augustine when the latter arrived on his evangelizing mission.
