The first castle at Canterbury was a simple Norman motte and bailey affair. The motte, or mound, probably reused an earlier Roman burial mound, now known as Dane John Mound. The name 'Dane John' is probably a corruption of the Norman 'donjon', or keep, the forerunner of our word 'dungeon'.
