Medieval Canterbury owed much of its prosperity to the cloth trade, which flourished after Flemish weavers were invited to settle here after leaving their homeland due to religious persecution. This old timber-framed building pn the banks of the River Stour dates to at least the 16th century, and probably much earlier. It was used by several weavers, who may have chosen the site for the readily available water flowing by at the base of the walls.
