The 15th century gatehouse to St John the Baptist Hospital fronts a vastly older almshouse, possibly the oldest in Britain. St John the Baptist was established by Archbishop Lanfranc in 1085. The chapel is largely 12th century, but many of the almshouses are of 15th and 16th century date.
