The oldest church in Britain. St Martins was in use before the arrival of St Augustine in 597 AD. Queen Bertha of Kent established a chapel here, possibly on the foundations of an existing Roman chapel. Certainly there are Roman stones incorporated into the structure at several places, notable the south and west chapel walls.
