Buckie is a medium-sized town on the north Moray coast and is the largest town in the old county of Banffshire. The busy harbour used to be a centre for herring fishing, but these days is just as popular for pleasure boating.
The harbour area and old fish market lie at the base of a cliff, and the old core of the town is atop the cliff, overlooking the sea. The centre of the town is Cluny Square.
At the west end is St Peter's Catholic Church, a reminder of a strong Roman Catholic heritage in this part of Scotland. The Speyside Way long distance path starts at Buckpool harbour, at the western edge of Buckie.
Five miles away is Cullen Old Kirk, a 14th-century church known for its excellent set of funerary monuments and carvings, while the cathedral city of Elgin is 12 miles distant.
