River Swale Waterfall

The Story Behind the Image - River Swale Waterfall, Richmond

One of my favourite historic towns in England is Richmond, Yorkshire, at the eastern edge of Swaledale and the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The River Swale runs along the southern edge of Richmond, below the imposing stone walls of 11th-century Richmond Castle.

If you stroll down Millgate at the south-eastern corner of Richmond's market square you will come to Riverside Road which, as its name suggests, runs along the north bank of the river.

Just as you reach the river you come to a series of lovely waterfalls, where the Swale drops over a low ledge that stretches almost completely across to the south bank.

Above the waterfall is a shallow pool where children like to splash, and you will usually find families gathered by the waterfall for a picnic.

I've visited the waterfall several times, but on this occasion I was keen to try taking a long exposure of the running water, using a 10-stop neutral density filter that my wife gave me as a gift.

If you're a keen landscape photographer you're already nodding your head, but for the rest of the world, that means simply a filter that allows me to use a very slow shutter speed and thus makes the water seem dreamy and blurred.

I love the result, just as I love Richmond!
