An Teallach, Wester Ross

The Story Behind the Image - An Teallach, Wester Ross

One of the most memorable photography trips in my life was two weeks I spent in Wester Ross one autumn. What a glorious part of the world!

One day I drove from my base at Aultbea to photograph the National Trust for Scotland property at Corrieshalloch Gorge. On my way back the afternoon turned ominous, with dark clouds rolling in and spots of rain threatening a downpour. It was so threatening that I despaired of getting any more photography done that day.

I pulled into a layby on the side of the A832 south of Dundonnell to consider my next move. Should I go back to my holiday cottage and call it a day?

As I was thinking it over and looking at my road atlas for places to go if the weather turned dreadful, I looked up at the mountain peak of An Teallach to the west.

There, to my surprise, I saw shafts of sunlight hitting the peak through the dark clouds. I practically leapt out of my car, grabbed my camera and ran to a good vantage point.

I managed to get 10 or 12 shots before the clouds rolled in and covered the sun completely, but I love this photo for the contrast of the sunlit mountain and the dark, threatening clouds. It is so typical of the Scottish Highlands.
