Loch Ewe, Wester Ross, Scotland

The Story Behind the Image - Loch Ewe, Scotland

One of the most enjoyable photography trips in my life was a week spent exploring Wester Ross from a base at Aultbea, near Gairloch.

In the middle of that week, the weather turned absolutely foul, as it can do in the Scottish Highlands, and I was house-bound in the holiday cottage I'd rented for the week.

After a full day cooped up in the cottage waiting for the weather to ease I was starting to go stir crazy. I decided to simply take a drive, just for a change, though I had no expectations at all that the weather would ease.

I drove along the shore of Loch Ewe, heading for the hamlet of Cove. As I reached Cove, I saw an old rowboat drawn up on the loch shore, with bracken growing inside it. I thought it was incredibly picturesque with the loch as a backdrop, but I wasn't about to get out of the car and photograph in a downpour.

No sooner had I had that thought then the rain stopped and the sky cleared.

Within five minutes what had been a fierce rainstorm was transformed into a lovely afternoon, with golden sunlight falling on the weathered boat and lighting the waters of the loch. What an incredible transformation - and what a beautiful scene
