Lastingham Church Crypt, Yorkshire

The Story Behind the Image - Lastingham Church Crypt

St Mary's Church in the North York Moors village of Lastingham stands on the site of a 7th-century monastery founded by St Cedd. The saint is said to have been buried beside the altar in what is now the church crypt.

I've visited Lastingham several times. The village is exceptionally pretty, and the church above ground is full of historic interest, but the Saxon crypt is simply exceptional

 What an incredibly atmospheric place!

The Saxon and early-Norman architecture are outstanding, but it is the atmosphere, the ambience of antiquity and a sense of the sacred that will live long in my memory.
