Young Ralph Cross Sunset

The Story Behind the Image - Young Ralph Cross at Sunset

The setting sun paints the sky vivid colours of orange and yellow behind Young Ralph Cross, near Rosedale, in the heart of the North York Moors National Park.

Young Ralph Cross (there is an 'old' Ralph Cross nearby) is a medieval wayside cross - just one of many scattered around the National Park.

Its location at a crossroads on top of the moors means that is probably the most easily recognised landmark on the North York Moors, so easily recognisable that it was chosen to be the symbol of the national park.

To get this photo I drove about 45 minutes from the holiday cottage we were renting near Malton, in the hope of catching the cross silhouetted against the setting sun. I'd say that worked out rather well!
