North Yorkshire Moors Railway, Goathland

The Story Behind the Image - Goathland Steam Train

One of the most popular visitor attractions in the North York Moors National Park is the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, a heritage railway line taking passengers the 18 miles between Pickering and Whitby.

The NYMR may be the most popular heritage steam railway line in the world; it carried some 355,000 passengers in 2010.

There are several good places to see the railway and its steam locomotives in action. Perhaps the best is at Goathland, in the heart of the National Park north of Pickering.

Keen railway enthusiasts are often lined up along the station platform at Goathland, or on the pedestrian bridge across the tracks, hoping for a good view of the locomotive under steam.

There's another option, though; climb the hillside on the far side of the railway line from the station and sit down amidst the beautiful purple heather, as I did for this photo of a train about to leave the station.
