Malham Cove, Limestone Pavement

The Story Behind the Image - Malham Cove Limestone Pavement

One of the most memorable photography trips in my life was a week our family spent at a holiday cottage in Airton, north of Skipton, in the south-eastern corner of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

A few miles north of Airton is the pretty village of Malham. If you follow a footpath from the village car park you come to Malham Cove, a semi-circular cliff creating a sheltered 'cove' under the high rockface.

There are steep trails leading up beside the Cove to the relatively flat surface on top, where you get amazing views over the surrounding countryside. The top of Malham Cove is split into deep fissures, creating what is known as limestone pavement.

I must have climbed Malham Cove a half-dozen times over the course of a week, hoping to capture the limestone pavement in the dramatic light of dawn or the golden glow of sunset. This photo was taken just after sunrise, with the early morning sun catching a solitary tree that was growing out of the limestone pavement.
